Farm Pond
Farm Pond

The design of a pond will depend upon its use – for instance, the design of a farm pond or fishing pond will be quite different from a small goldfish pond in a garden or a dipping pond in a school.

A Fishing Pond will need to be big enough to allow fish to spread out and hide from eachother. It should have good margins with bays and reeds to give shelter so that the anglers can feel isolated from eachother. The best ponds will have an island in the middle and the depth will vary from 12 foot to under 3 foot. It should be designed to allow water to be let out to reduce the level so that work can be done in the pond, or fish netted if necessary.

A Wildlife Pond or Dipping Pond can be any size, what is important is that it should look natural, not too tidy. It should be planted with native plants and will become stocked naturally with wildlife from the local area. Its position should be sheltered in order to attract shy creatures and encourage them to visit the pond for water or food.

Ornamental Ponds, such as goldfish or water lily ponds are designed to fit in with the layout of the garden, they should be an attractive feature.
